What is Biosystems?

Biosystems Engineers are trained in biological, environmental, and engineering sciences and challenged to improve the sustainability of production systems, decrease or eliminate environmental hazards, and preserve natural resources. Biosystems engineering focuses on a systems approach to solving problems. Our students take typical engineering courses for the first two-years and then start taking biosystems engineering courses during their junior and senior year, including instrumentation, biological modeling, machine design, and process engineering. The variety of types of engineering (mechanical, electrical, and civil) included in our program prepare our students for futures in many arenas. We have the pleasure of being a part of the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and the Environment and the Pigman College of Engineering. This means we have strong ties to the extension mission of the University of Kentucky.
